May is National Bike Month

Ok, so some of us spent the day riding our bikes, but now that the sun is setting and there is time for the computer, here’s a special note for our Executive Director, Tim Bustos, to kick off National Bike Month:

As many of you are aware, “National Bike Month” begins today, May 1st.  And, very timely, for those of you that haven’t seen the announcement from the League of American Bicyclists, they have just released their “Bicycle Friendly States” ranking for 2014.

Spoiler Alert:  Florida has made progress in the past year – both in our overall ranking, and in accumulated points.  We were ranked at 31 (out of 50) last year, and we came in at 28 this year.

What this means, obviously, is that we still have a lot of work to do to make Florida a more bicycle friendly state to ride in, but we are making progress.  Thank you to everyone that has contributed, and continues to contribute to this effort.

As far as National Bike Month goes, please let us know what you have planned in your community, and we’ll be sure to let our members know.   Does your community have a “Bike to Work Day” planned?  Post it to our Facebook page and let’s invite everyone to ride together to advocate and educate for excellence in bicycling.

Be careful out there, but remember – bicycling is supposed to be fun!

Happy Bike Month,

Tim Bustos, Executive Director

Florida Bicycle Association
