Celebrate Cycling

Over the weekend, Bike Florida and FBA hosted the Celebration of Cycling in Gainesville.  A few weeks ago, Bike Florida Executive Director Ron Cunningham guest blogged on the Safety Summit and today, I’m going to blog on the Share the Road Awards Banquet.

The Share the Road Awards Banquet marked my formal introduction as the new Executive Director for the Florida Bicycle Association.  It also marked my debut as a master of ceremony, and this was truly an honor.

“Having Ron Cunningham introduce me tonight as FBA’s new Executive Director reminds me of the night I introduced Ron as the new Executive Director of Bike Florida at a presentation for Sumter Landing Bicycle Club. I remember in Ron’s address how he described his new role of Executive Director as a ‘dream job’.

I can’t say being the Executive Director for FBA is a dream job for me, mostly because I know the work needed to perform the duties as Executive Director and work isn’t something I dream about.

I dream about glory. But you know what’s funny? After all these years of working within the bicycle community, I have come to realize that glory is not achieved in slumber; it is accomplished through hard work, dedication and persistence. Tonight we honor those who have done the work and have the dedication and the persistence to live the dream of glory I hope one day to achieve.”

Our honorees for the 2nd Annual Share the Road Awards:

Share the Road Volunteer – Chandler Otis

Share the Road Advocate – George Martin

Share the Road Visionary – Herb Hiller

Share the Road Leadership – City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn
