FBA Action Alert

Take Action for Trails.

Tell the Senate to Support 10% for Trails Today

Update from the Florida Greenways & Trails Foundation:

Imagine a statewide trail system that connects you to Key West, Tampa, Orlando, and Tallahassee. Our state legislators are considering just that this session as they are called upon to draft legislation for the implementation of Amendment 1, which could designate in excess of $20 billion over the next 20 years to environmental projects such as trails, beaches and wildlife habitats. This is your opportunity to lend your voice in support of connecting the statewide trail system by asking for “ten percent for trails” via the Florida Senate’s new website for public comments.

Why ten percent? The Office of Greenways and Trails within the Department of Environmental Protection has estimated a cost of $1.5 billion to acquire and construct the 3,300-mile statewide trail network, of which 1,100 miles is already in place. The Florida Greenways and Trails Foundation estimates an additional $1.1 billion will meet local community needs for facilities, management and infrastructure, for a total of ten percent of the Amendment 1 funds.

As you know, trails provide endless benefits to the environment and economy, including safe recreation, ecotourism opportunities, community connectivity, and improved population health. So, fellow trail enthusiast – tell your legislators this week before their committee meetings that you want ten percent for trails.
