March Membership Madness

We do things a little differently here in the Sunshine State, but it’s all in good health.

That’s right, March is mere days away and this Sunday marks the start of Florida Bike Month!  A whole 31 days of Florida bicycling!  Are you ready for some healthy bicycling fun?

Check out our Florida Bike Month events listing page to find a bicycle ride or activity.  We’ve separated events by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) district.  Choose one in your district or visit a neighbor district and bicycle something different.  From short rides to centuries, March is geared up to be a great time to ride a bicycle in Florida. Grab a friend and let’s ride together to encourage more folks to give bicycling a try.

In keeping with the National Bike Month model, the third week of March is set aside for the following:

March 16 – 20: Bike to Work Week or Bike to Whatever Week. We know you snowbirds didn’t come down here to work, so use this week as an incentive to bike somewhere you haven’t biked to before. If you are working and haven’t biked to work before, give it a try. Do give yourself extra time, FBA will not be issuing any notes for being late, but will commend you for being healthy.

March 20: Bike to Work Day or Bike to Whatever Day. Same premise as above, with the notion that this be the day to BIKE!

March 18: Pause for People Day.  Florida Bicycle Association and Alert Today Alive Tomorrow encourages everyone to spend the third Wednesday of March as a day of remembrance for loved ones lost in traffic fatalities and as a day to honor people who are pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on our roadways today. March 18 is our first Pause for People Day!

For the inaugural year, Alert Today Alive Tomorrow will set up a special Pause for People link to collect photos, thoughts and other expressions electronically. The submissions will be used to create a montage for display in Tallahassee during National Bike Month.  We will post to our Facebook page when the link becomes live.  Meanwhile, wherever you are and wherever you go, no matter what day it is, Pause for People in crosswalks, give 3 feet or more for cyclists when passing (in fact, to simplify matters, just move over a lane), and yield the right-of-way, always. Every life counts – Share the Road today, on March 18, and every day.   Safety doesn’t happen by accident.  Visit Alert Today Florida for more information on the FDOT Pedestrian and Bicycle Focused Initiative and the Safety Coalition – FBA is a member!

  1. Hi FBA,
Thank you so much for the Polar water bottle! I have been an avid bicyclist in Central Florida since 1978 when we arrived. I used to commute for 15 years and took part in the Horrible 100 for 25 years but 7 years ago at age 65 I have limited my bicycle experience to a stationary spinning bike. I do appreciate you efforts and still believe more people should travel unmotorized. Keep up the good work!
    Dr. Joe Warren
