Tampa Bay Turnaround

I live in the Tampa Bay area and have admitted that communications may, at times, favor Tampa Bay.  What can I say?  Once you get plugged into an area and see good things are happening, you just want to share the news.

That said, here are a few highlights to it being a Great Day in Tampa Bay:

  1. The League of American Bicyclists recently announced ELEVEN Bicycle Friendly Businesses in Tampa.  This is a first, in the history of the program, for one city to qualify so many at one time.  Go Tampa!
  2. Three Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees in the Tampa Bay Area (Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties) have recently scheduled joint meetings to ensure connectivity of trail systems and assist each other.  Teamwork WORKS!
  3. City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik joined President Bill Clinton to announce that the Channelside development lead by Strategic Property Partners will be home to the world’s first WELL Certified city district – designed to encourage walkability, provide access to healthy living, and preserve green space.  No kidding, you can read about it here:  Tampa WELL Certified

For those Florida Bicycle Association members in the Tampa Bay area, or non-members for that matter, the FBA annual membership meeting will be held in Oldsmar on Saturday, October 17, from noon until 4PM at the City of Oldsmar Fire Rescue Training room, 225 Pine Avenue North.  I realize meetings are not for everyone, but if you find yourself in the area, please consider attending this one.

Dale Allen of the Florida Greenways and Trails Foundation will give an update on the Coast-to-Coast Connector Trail.  DeWayne Carver, our very own Florida Bike/Ped Coordinator, will give a Florida Department of Transportation  Complete Streets policy update.  The Tampa Downtown Partnership, the masterminds behind getting those aforementioned 11 Bicycle Friendly businesses qualified, will share their story on how being “bicycle friendly” can be done.

There will be an association status report and a preview to FBA’s latest educational outreach program called Complete Streets Savvy.  This meeting only happens once a year, and it’s happening in the Tampa Bay area.  A Great Day in Tampa Bay worth sharing.

Editor’s note:  Bike Florida and Florida Bicycle Association share a common cause in bicycle education for residents and visitors to the Sunshine “Bike-Ped” State.  Share the Road license plate proceeds benefit Bike Florida and Florida Bicycle Association to further these bicycle educational efforts.  What’s on your motor vehicle?  Get the Share the Road license plate!

Did you know Rejjee is the only nation-wide multi-product registry and crowd sourced Lost & Found that includes discount product replacement offers on bicycles?  Rejjee also supports Florida Bicycle Association and FBA supports Rejjee.
