Eta anxiety? Exercise inside…and you can dance if you want to :-)

Get exercise, support Love to Ride Florida and still win prizes!

Along with the welcome break from the Florida heat, Autumn often brings Floridians and visitors rainy, windy, stormy weather. Our hurricane season doesn’t officially end until November 30 and some in the state just experienced a late forming system.

Don’t be dismayed: stay safe and dry by moving your cycling indoors. Best of all, you can still log rides to support bicycling and win prizes in the Love to Ride Florida challenge. When you log your rides, simply pick “indoor ride” from the drop-down menu. Here are some ways to get those rides in, despite the weather:

  • If you already have one, ride your stationary bike. It counts. If you don’t have one, but want one, consider renting first (for about $90 per week), purchasing an affordable model (for about $175), or buying a used model to be sure you know what features you need before spending more.
  • Trainer stands are available for as little as $80 online. A roller for the back wheel allows the wheel to spin without moving the bike forward. Thus, you can use your normal bike to ride inside and in-place. Using the trainer stand in the garage or on the covered porch can you give you a nice view of the daily rain showers.
  • Many gyms that have stationary bikes and spin classes offer free passes for a day or a week to let potential members check out the facility. If there is a gym near you that may be of interest, this seems like a great time to try it out.
  • If you absolutely can’t cycle indoors, try to at least get some form of physical activity while we weather the storm. Here are ideas for exercising at home without specialized equipment. (We especially like the suggestion to just dance!)
This week, three people who are new (or new-ish) to cycling will win prize packs worth $100 each through the Love to Ride Florida challenge.

Don’t forget that this week, prize packs are being given to three Love to Ride Florida participants who are new (or new-ish!) to bicycling. Make sure to log rides by Nov. 16 to be eligible. Next week, the special prize is for riders 65 years and older, so start thinking about who you can encourage to cycle, even if just for ten minutes.

Pedals up! Even indoors.

Guest Blogger Kelly Morphy is a Winter Garden-based advocate for community health who has been known to wear her bike gear indoors while competing with her son for best “flossing” dance moves.
