Our Members Matter

Today, a special thank you t0 our members.  Our members care about cycling.  Our members support our legislative platform initiatives to protect public safety that ensures walking or riding a bicycle on a public road isn’t punishable by death.  As the Florida legislative session comes to a close, we look forward to the off session and the opportunity to educate our delegates of our public safety concerns once again.  Endurance is a cyclist’s middle name, and we will go the distance to achieve our goals.

The following was shared with FBA membership earlier today:

The Florida Bicycle Association recently held our second Board of Directors quarterly meeting in Ocala.  We wish to thank the Ocala Mountain Bike Association and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and hospitality.

Highlights from the meeting include presentations from Mickey Thomason, manager of the Cross Florida Greenway, Jared Hartman, president of the Ocala Mountain Bike Association and an update to our soon to launch Ride Leader to Ride Marshal certification program.

FYI
FBA members have access to Board of Directors meeting minutes and other organization documents online at our Documents Library.  We appreciate your patience as we work on updates.  Please send your comments and suggestions regarding content to becky@floridabicycle.net.

2017 Florida Legislative Session
May 5th is scheduled as the close to session, but it looks as though it may be extended or a special session will be called as the House and Senate make efforts toward a budget agreement.

The bills of interest to the FBA legislative platform, HB 47, HB 69, HB 541, CS/SB 144, SB 1742, SB 408 and SB 432, died in committee.  Although these bills did not advance in committee, we are optimistic for next session and look forward to working with the bill sponsors on future legislation.

The attack on Share the Road specialty license plate continues to be monitored.  (Please read the April 24 News-Press.com article for reference.)HB 1375 and HB 545 are in Senate Messages.

The Senate Appropriations Committee heard and adopted SB 784 on Monday, May 1st.  It is currently on the Special Order Calendar for May 4th.  SB 56 was not considered and thus died in committee.

It ain’t over until it’s over, but we remain optimistic and will continue to monitor SB 784, HB 1375 and HB 545.  We remind you again to send a thank you to any law-maker you contacted during this session as it will help form a positive relationship moving forward.

On behalf of the FBA Board and Advisory Board, thank you to the heart and soul of our association – OUR MEMBERS – who made and continue to make the effort to preserve the purpose and integrity of the Share the Road specialty license plate.  Bike Florida and Florida Bicycle Association appreciate your support of our Share the Road initiatives.
